Support for Distance Learning

This NSF CAREER project uses authentic digital trace data from the Canvas learning management system to study nuanced patterns of academic delay in online learning.

Research question

What distinct patterns of academic delay appear in online courses, what student and course factors shape them, and which forms of support can improve the distance-learning experience?

Why it matters

Treating all late or delayed activity as the same can hide important differences in student behavior and course context. More precise evidence can help institutions design support that responds to the actual barriers students face online.

About the project

The project analyzes large-scale digital learning traces to distinguish student-, course-, design-, and context-level contributors to academic procrastination and online learning outcomes.
